Let it Be
by John Lennon & Paul McCartney
cover for two pianos by Anderson & Roe
Throughout the ages motherhood has inspired the genesis of countless works of art, from fables of lore and sacred paintings to theatrical tragedies and, of course, music of all genres. Motherhood, perhaps the prototype of creation, inspired us to utilize our full creative potential in arranging and interpreting “Let It Be” by the Beatles. In this classic song, Paul McCartney pays poignant and powerful tribute to his mother Mary, who tragically died of an embolism when he was only 14; the song’s lyrics, and gospel-inflected tone, also invokes the Virgin Mary, the ultimate maternal icon:
When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
In our arrangement, we take on the roles of duelling gospel pianists (to the max!), while also underscoring the redemptive uplift of the song’s message—and the power of music to illuminate the darkness.
